U.S. President-Elect, Donald J. Trump.

Benjamin Netanyahu, prime minister of Israel
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu took to X to
congratulate Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump, saying, “Dear
Donald and Melania Trump, Congratulations on history’s greatest comeback! Your
historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a
powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America. This is
a huge victory! In true friendship, yours, Benjamin and Sara Netanyahu.” The
two leaders, who enjoy a strong relationship despite
previous difficulties, reportedly spoke late
this morning, partially to discuss threats from Iran and the ongoing wars in
the Middle East, which Trump said he’d end.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
In a lengthy post on X, the
president of Ukraine said, “Congratulations to @realDonaldTrump on his
impressive election victory!” He continued: “I appreciate
President Trump’s commitment to the ‘peace through strength’ approach in global
affairs. This is exactly the principle that can practically bring just peace in
Ukraine closer. I am hopeful that we will put it into action together.” While
Trump has said that he’d end the war in Ukraine in 24
hours, he has also praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and criticized the
scale of monetary aid the U.S. is sending to Ukraine. These statements have led
to a complex relationship between the two.
Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
British Prime Minister Keir
Starmer took to X to congratulate Trump on
his “historic election victory” saying, “I look
forward to working with you in the years ahead. As the closest of allies, we
stand shoulder to shoulder in deference of our shared values of freedom,
democracy and enterprise. From growth and security to innovation and tech, I
know that the UK-US special relationship will continue to prosper on both sides
of the Atlantic for years to come.” Starmer, who’s of Britain’s centre-left
Labour Party, has recently tried making inroads with Trump after being critical
of the president-elect in the past.
Emmanuel Macron, president of France
French President Emmanuel Macron
said, “Congratulations, President @realDonaldTrump” on X.
“Ready to work together as we did for four years. With your convictions and
mine. With respect and ambition. For more peace and prosperity.” The
two leaders, however, have had an unpredictable relationship,
exhibiting both friendliness and opposition to each other over the years.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
Justin Trudeau, the
prime minister of Canada, said on X, “Congratulations to
Donald Trump on being elected President of the United States. The friendship
between Canada and the U.S. is the envy of the world. I know President Trump
and I will work together to create more opportunity, prosperity, and security
for both of our nations.” Trump and Trudeau have reportedly had
a complex relationship, and Trump’s economic plan of import tariffs may
significantly impact Canada’s economy.
Viktor Orbán, Prime Minister of Hungary
“The biggest comeback in US political
history! Congratulations to President @realDonaldTrump on his
enormous win. A much-needed victory for the World,” said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on X early
this morning. In a separate post, which featured a video
compilation of Trump praising him, Orbán said, “The long wait is over.
President @realDonaldTrump is back.” The two leaders have a close
relationship, with both publicly speaking highly of each other. Orbán, a
far-right leader with close ties to Putin, reportedly even
said that if Trump won the election, he would open “several bottles of
champagne” in celebration.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister
of India, sent the “Heartiest congratulations [to] my friend
@realDonaldTrump on your historic election victory” in an early
morning post on X. In a separate post late
this morning, Modi said that he “Had a great conversation with my
friend, President @realDonaldTrump, congratulating him on his spectacular
victory.” Trump and Modi, a popular leader who pushes Hindu
nationalism and anti-Muslim sentiments, have an amicable relationship, with the
two praising one another both during and after Trump’s first term in office.
U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres
In a statement released
today on the United Nations Secretary-General’s website, Guterres said, “I
commend the people of the United States of America for their active
participation in the democratic process. I congratulate President-elect Donald
J. Trump and I reaffirm my belief that the cooperation between the United
States and the United Nations is an essential pillar of international relations.
The United Nations stands ready to work constructively with the incoming
administration to address the dramatic challenges our world is facing.” Tensions between
the two leaders, however, over differing views on international relations could
complicate their cooperation going forward.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte
The newly elected Secretary-General
of NATO, Mark Rutte, said on X this morning, “I just
congratulated @realDonaldTrump on his election as President of
the United States. His leadership will again be key to keeping our Alliance strong.
I look forward to working with him again to advance peace through strength
through #NATO.” But Trump has been critical of the
alliance, repeatedly saying he’d leave NATO and criticizing other
alliance members for weak defense
spending.
